REAL PROPERTY

REAL PROPERTY

88mins
Gretel, a real estate broker, guides us through places laden with sentimental value and the memories behind each object, each space. The property owners share a deep desire for change and the uncertainty of an island in transition. While property transactions are common in Latin America, in Cuba, it is a recent reality, offering an opportunity to reflect on the value of a house, as a home and as a metaphor for the system, for a nation.

In Cuba, a law that for more than half of a century prohibited the free sale and purchase of houses has been repealed. In the middle of this convulsive and uncertain context, we are guided by Gretel, a character who is a product of the historical moment. Someone who believes to know how to sell real estate assertively, without emotional considerations or personal affectations.

Together with her, as if we were attentive observers, we enter spaces that are far from being marketable objects, being in reality, objects full of affection and stories. Among this range of stories and realities, we meet María José and her brother Francisco, who live in the only house that their family has had since 1893, and that today they decide to put it up for sale because they can no longer sustain it. In parallel, Deisy and Hassan, a mother and her son, both musicians, prepare for a farewell ritual. For this, both return -through their photos- to the houses they once lived in, until they reach one, called “Villa Deysi”, a place they had to leave years ago due to a deep economic crisis. Mother and son now live in the middle of a tiny apartment of social interest, in a suburb of Havana.

The commercialization of real estate is a reality that we already live daily in the rest of the continent, and that now people in Cuba are beginning to understand. In this way, we and our characters live an encounter between the past and the future of the island, an experience mediated by the value of objects, memory and the sense of home.
