The documentary The Father's Name" portrays the plight of at least five million Brazilian citizens whose civil registration documents do not include paternity. It also addresses the discrediting of women who must struggle alone to raise their children.

The film features testimonies from mothers, children, and professionals who deal with the social, legal, and political context of identifying the biological father so his name can be included on their children’s birth certificates. The film features testimony from Judges Andréa Pachá, Vanessa Cavalieri, and Raquel Chrispino, as well as researchers, mothers who had to go to court to register their children, and men and women who do not have the father’s name on their documents. It also features testimony from Congresswoman Erika Kokay, author of a bill to reverse the burden of proof.
